What are common faults in Lotus cars?

Here is a list of Lotus-specific issues that you should keep an eye out for and troubleshoot as soon as an issue arises:

1. Corrosion

Lotus cars can have problems with corrosion in the footwells. This particularly affects Elise S1 and S2 models, which were recalled in 2004.

Lotus is aware that a small number of Elise models factory fitted with synthetic mats in the footwells, have experienced some cosmetic corrosion of the top surface of the aluminium footwell floor panels.

Generally, however, other Lotus models are not known for corrosion issues. If you are a Lotus owner, try where possible to avoid roads with salt and store your car inside a garage or storage facility to minimise the risk of corrosion.

2. Gearbox

A handful of Lotus cars were affected by a gearbox issue, causing the car to jump out of 5th gear. This issue was limited to models that used the Honda gearbox however, the issue was covered under warranty.

If you are looking to buy a used Lotus car, check whether the model you are interested in uses the Honda gearbox and whether the previous owner had the issue fixed under warranty.

3. Oil Leaks

Oil leaks can affect any make or model of car. However, due to the design of many Lotus car engine bays, oil leaks can result in a fire. Hot exhaust components are situated in close proximity to the engine, which can cause issues if oil leaks occur.

As a Lotus owner, you should check your engine for oil leaks regularly to prevent any risk of fire. If you partake in track days, you should also consider carrying a fire extinguisher for safety.

4. Head Gasket

The Rover engine used in some Lotus cars is prone to head gasket failure. The K series engine has a very small surface area between the water jacket and the outer face, which can cause premature gasket failures and water leaks.

If you own a Lotus with a K series engine or are looking to buy one, we highly recommend that you check if the head gasket has been replaced. Modified gaskets are available, which makes the problem less likely.

5. Electrics

Electric issues are a commonly reported issue by Lotus owners. From flashing warning lights and faulty sensors to short-circuiting, electrical problems can affect any model of Lotus car.

However, not all models experience electrical issues and most can be fixed with proper diagnostics and expertise. If you need support with electrics on your Lotus, our engineers at Hofmann’s are well-versed in issues like this. Contact our team for more information.

6. Air Conditioning

While not an essential part of a Lotus, air conditioning can make driving your car far more enjoyable. When it goes wrong, it can be uncomfortable for you and your passengers.

Lotus cars are reported to have some issues with air con systems. Owners report that their car’s air con fails due to low freon levels or blown fuses. These are not major issues, however, and are fixed very easily.
