Launched in 1964, the Mustang was a pioneering force on the track, swiftly becoming an icon in American racing heritage. Ford’s decision to enter the Mustang in various competitions, including the SCCA Trans-Am series, marked a pivotal moment. The car’s performance and agility quickly garnered attention, earning it a formidable reputation. The Mustang’s success on the track not only solidified its place in the hearts of racing enthusiasts but also translated into commercial triumph, as the victories on the circuit undoubtedly influenced the car’s popularity in the showroom. The 1960s Mustang became a symbol of American muscle, seamlessly blending speed, style, and success on the racecourse, leaving an enduring legacy that continues to influence the Mustang lineage to this day.
This rare, right hand drive Mustang has significant provenance of its own, with multiple wins and podium finishes in ‘The Masters Series’ including an outright win at the prestigious Spa 6 Hour Endurance meeting driven by Phil Keen and Sean McInerney. Prior to this the car was prepared by renowned TVR racer Nigel Reuben for Mike Whitaker, who tasked Nigel to build the fastest Mustang on the Masters grid. This goal was achieved and the pair had a year of dominant success in the Masters Historic Pre-66 Touring cars. Latterly, the car was sold to James Thorpe who commissioned a complete rebuild with Alan Mann racing to include a fresh 440bhp engine by Steve Warrior. It comes with a current FIA Technical Passport valid until 31/12/2025 and would be a perfect entrant in the upcoming ‘Ken Miles Cup’, an all-Mustang race being held at the 81st Goodwood Member’s meeting in April 2024.
